With the presentation of the new Microsoft laptops with the, also new, Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon finally has it), a function that has generated quite a bit of controversy despite there being compelling reasons.
The Recall function is responsible for taking screenshots on the computer periodically, to build a history and allow users to consult it through Microsoft Copilot. All information is processed locally on the computer (it is not uploaded to Microsoft servers to be analyzed, so there are no privacy issues), hence it is a function for which an NPU on the computer is necessary. .
This feature will initially be available on new Surface They are Qualcomm’s ARM processors and will reach the rest of the PCs with x86 architecture by the end of the year. Some users have made this function work on computers that do not include an NPU and are managed by a processor created in collaboration between Microsoft and Qualcomm available in the Surface range.
So it was a matter of time before some enthusiasts were encouraged to port this functionality to any PC. This project is already a reality and comes from the Amperage application, an application that skips the hardware requirements necessary to use this function, so it not only works on computers with ARM processorsbut also works on x86 processors that include dedicated NPU as is the case of the most modern processors in the Core Ultra range of Intel and those of amd.
Use Recall on unsupported PCs
The first and foremost thing to be able to install Amperage is to install the latest available version of Windows 11 24H2, a version that is currently in the Release Preview phase and has build number 26100.712
If we already meet this requirement, we must visit this link and download the latest version available now we unzip the file.
Next, we download the AI components for ARM64 from here. When unzipping it, we must copy it to the same folder where we have unzipped the Ampere application.
To install it, we access CMD and run the file with the following command to install it:
amperage /install
Once installed, we restart the PC and to start use recall we use the keyboard shortcut key Windows + J.
Ampere is a user-created application available on GitHub. It is not a version created by Microsoft, so it may present some operating problems, so, whenever possible, it is advisable to use it in a virtual machine or on a PC that is not the one we use to work. that the stability of the equipment may be compromised.
If you are not in a hurry to try this feature, the only thing we can do is wait for it to be officially launched for all users of non-ARM processors or, buy one of these new devices that will hit the market in the coming days. If you want to learn more about this project, you can do so through this link to the GitHub page where the project is located.
