Does your computer restart when it should shut down? 3 tricks to solve it

Something quite common is trying to turn off the computer and, seconds later, it turns on again. Even though we give it a very specific order, the system makes an independent decision that we do not want. Attempting a forced shutdown is a bad option as it can lead to data corruption. We are going to explain how you can solve the problem of the reboot of the computer not wanted.

The first thing you should know is that this problem is much more normal than we may think. There are different reasons why this problem may occur. We are going to explain how to identify the possible origin of the problem and the most common actions to take to solve the problem.

Exploring Windows Event Viewer

Not many people know it, but Windows has a system for recording all incidents. This action can help us identify if it is a problem with the operating system or if it has nothing to do with it. To access this menu, follow these steps:

  1. Write the term “Event Viewer” in the Windows search engine and click on it.
  2. We display the “Windows Logs” option.
  3. Now, we enter the “System” option.
  4. See if any of the events have an “Error” or “Critical” severity level.
  5. If nothing appears in this section, you must go to the “Applications” section and we will search here.

If we see an error, we should look for it to find the solution to the problem reported by Windows. If no error appears close to the shutdown process, we are going to give you some guidelines.

Disable fast startup

This is usually the source of the problem, causing the computer to restart and not shut down. The quick start function can cause problems. Let’s disable this feature and see if the problem is solved:

  1. Press the key combination “Win + R”.
  2. We enter the command: powercfg.cpl
  3. We press “Enter” and the “Power Options” panel will open.
  4. We enter the option “Choose the behavior of the start/stop buttons”.
  5. Let’s now go to the “Shutdown Settings” option.
  6. The Windows security shield should appear and next to it “Change currently unavailable settings.” This function will allow us to change the parameters of the “Shutdown Configuration”.
  7. Now, in the “Shutdown Settings”, click on “Enable fast startup (recommended)” to remove its selection.

It is not necessary to make any other adjustments in this section, just uncheck this box. Now you just have to save the changes and it should work correctly.

Update drivers and Windows

These are the simplest actions that we can take and that in many cases solve the problem. The first thing we will do is go to the Control Panel and automatically check for Windows updates and drivers. If nothing appears at this point, we can perform a more specific search for drivers.

You have the option to search for the drivers manually or from the “Device Manager”. Both processes are very slow, we recommend using the Driver Booster software. It quickly and easily scans our system drivers and offers us the most recent version of them.

Additionally, you can try disconnecting all the peripherals and connecting them one by one. It may seem a bit absurd, but it helps to identify what is causing problems. Normally, it is not the device, but the controller, so we can save time identifying it this way.

Disable automatic restart

Windows has a mechanism that causes it to restart automatically in the event of a system failure. This function is not well known and is possibly the source of the problem. To deactivate this function you must follow these steps:

  1. We are going to press the key combination “Win + R” and in the “Run” dialog box we write the command: sysdm.cpl
  2. We press “Enter” to open the “System Properties”.
  3. Let’s go to the “Advanced options” tab
  4. We look for the “Startup and recovery” option and press the configuration button
  5. We removed the selection of the “Automatic restart” option in the “System failure” section.

You should know that this only “masks” the problem, since the main fault is still there. What we achieve with this is that, when we tell the system to turn off, it actually turns off and does not restart.
