Similarly, we access the web applications that we use daily online, we check our social networks, or messaging applications. One of the most widespread modes of use in recent years is everything related to the multimedia playback. To a large extent due to the different streaming platforms that we can use right now, and for these tasks the browser is a key software element.

This way we can see our favorite content from services like Netflix or Amazon Prime Videoamong others. And all this without mentioning the enormous use we normally make of Google’s streaming website, YouTube. This is precisely the useful function that most web browsers, including Mozilla Firefox, offer us at this time.

Specifically we refer to the possibility of activating the function called Picture in Picture. Many of you have probably used it on many occasions in recent times. By activating this feature, the video running in the corresponding tab always remains in the foreground over the rest of the programs running. It is a window that we can reposition and resize to improve your user experience.

This allows us to carry out other tasks on the computer while continuing to watch the video in question. Firefox has taken this feature to the next level, as we are about to tell you.

How to make Picture in Picture activate itself in Firefox

For all of you who use this feature for videos on a regular basis, the feature that Mozilla has now included in Firefox will be extremely useful. First of all, note that at the moment the functionality is in a testing period and we can activate it in the Nightly version of the web browser. Nevertheless, it is expected that the stable version will soon be available for everyone.

Specifically, we are referring to the possibility that this video playback mode that we are talking about, Picture in Picture, is activated automatically. Basically, this means that when we start the new function and access a tab that contains a video being played, this mode will start working automatically.

To achieve this, the first thing we do is make sure that we have the latest Nightly version of Firefox. Next we go to the program’s configuration window, more specifically the section called Firefox Labs. Here we find the function that interests us and that is disabled by default, Picture in Picture: auto open on tab switch.

From that moment on, all streaming videos that we find in the player will be displayed in Picture in Picture mode without us having to activate the functionality with the corresponding icon.
