Something very important in any computer equipment is the fans, which help dissipate heat from the system. These vary their operating speed depending on the load that exists at all times in the system. It may be that, for no apparent reason, the fans on your computer turn to full speedbut we are going to help you identify and solve the problem.

There are different reasons why fans may operate at full load. The first has to do with some background program that consumes a lot of resources, which is usually malware.

Then, there would be physical problems such as incorrect connection of the fans or poor maintenance of the system. Additionally, the problem could be in the software we are using to manage them. First we will see the software adjustments and later the adjustments or actions to be carried out by hardware.

Programs running in the background

If it has never happened to you before, chances are there is some program in the background that consumes a lot of resources. Because of this, the fans run at or very close to their maximum capacity.

Seeing if it is some software in the background is as simple as entering the “Task Manager.” Here you can see the CPU, GPU and RAM consumption of our system. If there is some software that we have recently used and closed, which consumes a lot of resources, it would be the source of the problem. We just have to right click and click on “End task” to finish the process.

In case the process has a name that we do not identify, we should be concerned. Possibly, we have some type of malware running in the background. We must pass Windows Defender, as well as the Malwarebytes software, in order to eliminate this malicious program.

Motherboard software

Motherboard manufacturers often add comprehensive management software. Within these programs we find different options, among them, one focused on the management of fans. We have to check that the fan curve is correctly configured.

But, if we do not have this tool installed, it would be advisable for us to install it. It will allow us to manage the fans, in addition to other important aspects.

You should also keep in mind that there may be a software conflict. It is possible that we have the motherboard software and some peripheral management program. Both programs could be trying to take control of the fans and therefore causing the fans to run at full load.

If you have a laptop, you may use the manufacturer’s software. For laptops, what is usually offered are different profiles depending on the needs. There is usually a power saving mode, a balanced one and another that gets the most out of the system. Verify that precisely the profile that gets the most out of the system is not selected. If so, move to other more efficient profiles.

Power plan

Something we can also review is the Windows “Power Plan.” Maybe it is in a plan that tries to make the most of the system’s capabilities. We can verify it like this:

  1. We click on the Windows icon.
  2. Now, we must click on “Settings” which has the symbol of a gear wheel.
  3. We have to enter the “System” option.
  4. We now go to the left panel in the “Energy and suspension” option.
  5. You must go to the far right and click on “Additional power settings”.

Here you will see all the available plans and which one is active. We can even create custom plans that suit our needs.

Management through FanControl

A very interesting option we have is to use specific software. The most complete and easiest to use is FanControl, a very intuitive program and is open source. It allows you to monitor the load on the fans and the operating speed, not only those of the system and the CPU, but also those of the graphics card.

The installation process is quite complete and guides us through the process. In addition, we can make different types of configurations and adjustments on the fans, including different ramps. The data is totally real, since this software is based on Libre Hardware Monitor.
